Astrology Condoned?

Question

Does God condone the use of astrology in Matthew 2:2?

Answer

Matthew 2:2 "Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him."

God condemns astrology and other such arts in Scripture (Lev. 19:26; 20:6; Deut. 4:19; 18:10-12; Isa. 8:19; 47:13-14; Dan. 2:27-28, etc.).

But what is astrology? It is a science of the stars and planets. It basically uses the positions of these heavenly bodies as a source to gather information. From this it claims to enable people to understand the past, present, and the future within a universe full of meaning.

The star referred to in Matthew 2:2 was to announce the birth of Christ, not to foretell this event. Christ had already been born (Matthew 2:1, 16). It was for proclamation, not prediction, that it appeared.

God, the creator of the universe (Gen. 1-2), also uses the heavenly bodies to confirm his glory (Psa. 19:1-6) and his existence (Rom. 1:18-20).

God does not condone the use of astrology.
